GDDR6 memory, Nvidia will debut its 16Gbps

Introduced last April, the new generation of high-performance RAM memory, known as GDDR6, has been present at the GPU Technology Conference 2017, hosted by Nvidia.

The Korean company SK Hynix, which leads its development with Samsung, is the one that has taken the new information and modules to the event. It is very logical as the industry hopes that this technology will be released in the new graphics unit architecture of Nvidia, called Volta.

Before entering into the details exposed we have to know that neither the memory nor the graphs based on Volta will be a reality until the beginning of 2018, so we are anticipating too much, but that is how the market works.

In the graphs that have captured the people of HardwareLuxx we have confirmation of several important points in the evolution that promises GDDR6.

For example, it raises the speed up to 16Gbps, with a voltage 10% lower than GDDR5X. We remind you that the current highest speed is in the 12 Gbps of the GDDR5X Micron company.

It will be possible to create chips of up to 16Gb (2GB), starting from a minimum of 8Gb - which is the one shown in the images -, so that in both cases it doubles the capacity with respect to GDDR5.

The premiere is Nvidia thing

Nvidia has a good mix of high performance memories in its various current solutions, but the future clearly points to GDDR6. For starters, we have seen that in the most professional range have no problem in brand new HBM2, which will also use AMD in their Radeon RX Vega.

In a commercial but high-end step we find the use of GDDR5X type memory, capable of operating at 11Gbps. It is present in models like TITAN Xp, Titan X or GTX 1080 Ti. For the rest of cards use GDDR5.

The future gets a little darker for the HBM alternative, at least at an affordable level, as it is more expensive to manufacture. During the day we expect some presentation or official information from Nvidia.
